Obituary: Mel Salz

Great-grandfather, U.S. Army veteran, volunteer

“With heavy hearts, we mourn the loss of Mel Salz, a dedicated husband, father, and friend,” his family shared. “Mel passed away on February 6th, 2024, knowing that he was deeply loved by his family and friends.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Lillian, and his wife of 43 years, Mimi Salz.

Mel was born in Pennsylvania, and moved to Pasadena prior to his school years. He later relocated to Claremont, merging the Salz and Singer families, and making the area his home for over 40 years.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea, and continued his commitment to serve and contribute to his community. He most recently volunteered with the La Verne Police Department’s Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol.

“Mel’s selflessness and dedication left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him,” his family said. “Whether representing his business or living as a member of his community, he built and maintained long lasting relationships with everyone he met. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished in our hearts.”

He is survived by his children, Ron, Cindy, Stephanie, Linda, Jeff, Jim, and Shellie; and his brother Joel and his fiancé Carolyn. He will also be remembered fondly by his 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Services will be held at noon Sunday, February 18 at Mount Sinai Memorial Park, 5950 Forest Lawn Dr., Los Angeles, CA 90068.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, “to honor Mel’s memory and support those affected by this debilitating disease. Your generosity during this difficult time is deeply appreciated.” Go to p2p.onecause.com/diy-tributes-memorials (type “Mel Salz” into the “Search to find a tribute page” field) to give.
