Dr. Earl James “Jim” Fahringer, Claremont Symphony Orchestra music director emeritus, died on December 7, 2013. He was 78.

Dr. Fahringer dedicated his musical life to the CSO. During the past 53 years, he served as violinist, violist, percussionist, assistant conductor and for 32 years, as music director. He was also co-conductor of the Claremont Youth Symphony Orchestra for more than 20 years.

“It is with deepest sadness that the Claremont Symphony Orchestra mourns Dr. Fahringer’s passing,” CSO colleagues shared. “The orchestra was his family.” 

A crypt-side service will be held on Thursday, December 19 at 11 a.m. in the mausoleum of Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 1712 S. Glendale Ave. in Glendale. Members of the Claremont Symphony Orchestra will provide music and tributes. Dr. Fahringer will be honored at the two performances of the annual CSO Messiah Sing-along, which he initiated over 30 years ago. They will be held on Sunday, December 22 at 1:30 and 4 p.m. at Bridges Hall of Music, 150 E 4th St. in Claremont on the Pomona College campus. (Doors open at 1 and 3:30 p.m.)
