Obituary: Morton Johnson
Lifelong Rotarian, easygoing friend
Morton Colhoun Johnson, a longtime Claremont resident, died of complications from prostate cancer on November 2, 2016 in Springfield, Oregon. He was 95.
He was born on January 15, 1921 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Edward Percival Johnson and Mary Clark Johnson, who moved to Claremont in 1926. He graduated from Pomona College in 1942, then served as motor officer in the 71st Infantry Regiment, 44th Division during World War II. After working for Quaker Oats as a salesman Mr. Johnson returned to Claremont where he married his wife Jane in 1950 and accepted a position in the alumni office at Pomona College, where he bicycled to work for more than 27 years. He then moved to Monte Rio, California and managed income property before moving to Eugene, Oregon in 1998. He and Jane were also counselors at Plantation Camp in northern California from 1960 to 1970.
Mort was a social, active man who was deeply involved in Rotary Club for most of his life. He enjoyed volunteer work at the Armstrong Redwoods State National Reserve in Guerneville, California. His family and friends will always remember him as a kindly, easygoing and intelligent person. His keyboard playing and singing are warmly remembered.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Hinckley Johnson of Eugene, Oregon; sister-in-law Caryl C. Hinckley of Bellingham, Washington; his sons Charles E. Johnson of West Linn, Oregon and Roderick C. Johnson of Eugene; and his daughter Marguerite L. Cooney of Eugene, as well as granddaughters Natalie O’Neill and Elizabeth Cooney, grandson-in-law Mike O’Neill and two great-granddaughters. He is preceded in death by his former son-in-law, John Cooney of Eugene.
