Obituary: Judy Alice Kern

Tireless volunteer, loving wife and grandmother

Judy Alice Kern, 81, died peacefully on November 18, 2017 at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Ontario, California.

She was born July 8, 1936 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the daughter of Lester and Alice Simmons. In June 1959 she married Dale Kern in Algona, Iowa. Shortly after their wedding day, the young couple headed west, to California, settling in Claremont.

In California, the couple welcomed two sons, Michael and Jeffrey, and a daughter, Dalene. Ms. Kern worked as a human resource manager at Titech International in Pomona, but first and foremost, she was a loving wife and mother.

Between working nearly full-time and raising a family, she was also very active in her community. She served on the advisory council and later as president of the local Parent Teacher Association, was a Brownie troop leader, American Youth Soccer Organization commissioner and a Claremont Civic Association board member.

She was also a chairperson for Claremont’s annual Fourth of July celebration and on the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission, was involved in the Pomona Valley Juvenile Diversion Project and volunteered with Claremont’s Community Senior Services.

Through her volunteerism and many activities, she touched many lives and made many friends.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Dale Kern; sons, Michael and Jeffrey; daughter, Dalene; and grandchildren, Andrew and Ashley.

Per her wishes, Ms. Kern’s ashes were dispersed off the San Diego coastline on January 5.
