Obituary: Cara Hamilton Wingert

Librarian, volunteer, passionate political devotee

Claremont resident Cara Hamilton Wingert, 96, died January 4 after a short illness.

Cara was born in Cleveland, Ohio. She was married and moved to Claremont in 1951. A stay-at-home wife and mother, she was a longtime member of Claremont United Church of Christ and was active in her community. More recently she attended White Avenue Baptist Church in Pomona. 

She was trained as a professional librarian and volunteered at Claremont Public Library, Claremont High School and Citrus College libraries. 

Ms. Wingert had a lifelong interest in politics. She looked forward to church every week and cherished her biennial family reunions.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Willis A. Wingert MD, and her brother,  Perry Hamilton. 

She is survived by her daughter, Holly Wingert of Cleveland, Ohio; son Willis A. Wingert III (Kim) of Ontario, California; grandchildren Joshua Wingert (Jami), Anderson Wingert, Linda Wingert, Sarah Wingert; and great-grandchildren Andrew and Avery Wingert. She is also survived by her brother, Todd Hamilton; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, a few great-great nieces and nephews; and her cat, Smidgen Sweetie Pie. 

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 19 at White Avenue Baptist Church, 675 S. White Ave., Pomona.
