Obituary: Mary Frances Patterson Brehaut

Beloved mother, grandmother, longtime Claremonter, devout Catholic, sports fan

Mary Frances Patterson Brehaut died peacefully at her Claremont home on Sunday, June 16 at the age of 95.

Mary was born December 19, 1923 in Los Angeles. The daughter of James and Loretto Patterson, she was one of five children. She lived in several cities in Southern California and attended schools in Ontario before the family settled in Pomona in 1940.

She finally moved to Claremont after marrying longtime resident Burton Brehaut. They built a home in Claremont where they raised four daughters and three sons.

Ms. Brehaut was able to live out her life in this same home for the past 64 years thanks to the loving care she received from her caregivers, Hilda and Fernanda Alonso and Rosa Aguilar.

She was a great sports fan, never missing any of her children’s sporting events. She was also an avid beach goer. Many a vacation was spent at Southern California beaches, and her children were raised with a deep appreciation of sand and surf.

She was a longtime parishioner of Claremont’s Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church. She devoted many years to OLA, always attending daily mass.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Burton Brehaut; son, Burt; and daughter, Loretta.

She is survived by her children Ann (Jim) Adkisson, Susan (Jim) Tuley, Sally Brehaut, Trish (John) Wood, Dan (Yvonne) Brehaut, and Paul (Sue Ann) Brehaut; 18 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

She loved all animals, but was particularly fond of Golden Retrievers. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Southern California Golden Retriever Rescue at scgrrescue.org.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 20 at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 435 N. Berkeley Ave., Claremont.

A private burial will be held the next day at Holy Cross Cemetery in Pomona. She will be buried next to her son Burt and daughter Loretta.
