Great-grandfather, engineer, teacher, volunteer, sports enthusiast

Longtime Claremont resident, Wade Anthony Myers died on September 20, 2020, at the age of 90 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

Born October 18, 1929, in Terre Haute, Indiana to George and Margaret Myers, Wade grew up in Fort Wayne and Indianapolis and graduated from Thomas Carr Howe High School in Indianapolis.

He left Indiana to attend the University of New Mexico. There, he met his wife, Muriel, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. He later earned an MBA from California State University, Fullerton.

Mr. Myers made a career working as an electrical engineer, beginning in 1949 for North American Aviation, Douglas Aircraft and General Motors. He retired from General Dynamics in 1992 after 31 years of service. He also taught business classes at Cal Poly Pomona and Citrus College.

Married in 1951, Wade and Muriel moved around for several years, finally settling in Claremont in 1961. He contributed to the community by coaching his sons’ Little League and Pony League baseball teams and his youngest daughter’s softball teams.

He faithfully attended Pomona First Baptist Church (now Purpose Church), where he and Mrs. Myers spent more than 30 years serving in the children’s ministry, teaching kindergarten Sunday school. He also served on the board of First Baptist School of Pomona and taught an adult Bible class for the church.

However, those who knew him best will remember him for his enthusiasm for automobiles, Dodgers baseball, UCLA basketball, Notre Dame football and the Indianapolis 500 from his hometown.

He is survived by his wife Muriel; daughters Patricia (Doug) and Laura; sons Brad (Laura) and Douglas (Kelli); five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
