Helen ‘Maxine’ Malcolm

Defender of fairness and justice,  wife of former city manager

Helen “Maxine” Malcolm, wife of former Claremont City Manager Dick Malcolm, died February 10, 2013 in Santa Rosa, California. She was 87.

Mrs. Malcolm was born in Portland, Oregon on November 29, 1925, the daughter of Stewart and Ruth (Austin) Coutts. She loved people, according to family, so much so that all who knew her were constantly amazed. In later years, family shared, her caregivers would comment on the love her smile expressed.

Family said Mrs. Malcolm is remembered for her enormous heart, noting that she was a “defender of fairness and justice.” Her work included serving the state of California in Sacramento, at the Brandeis Institute in Simi Valley and at the War Department in Portland, Oregon. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with family as well as playing bridge and brightening others’ lives with her generous and patient spirit.

“She was the best mom, grandma and  friend, and her smile made others feel her huge love,” family expressed.

Mrs. Malcolm is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Kim Malcolm, Kathy Woodward and Lyle Woodward, Laura Malcolm and Bill Olzman; and by 7 grandchildren, Meredith, Graham, Meghan, Scott, Melissa, Miranda, Katie, Devin and Gabriel.

She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Cathy Clark, as well as Ray and Evelyn Tomlin, Dawn Malcolm, Tom and Marilynn Malcolm and Vic Weisser. Mrs. Malcolm was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Richard, and by her son, Richard Stephen.

Services will be held on Saturday, March 2 at 11:30 a.m. at Oak Park Cemetery in Claremont, where she will be buried next to her husband. A celebration of life will follow at the DoubleTree Hotel in Claremont.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Malcolm’s honor to Face to Face/Sonoma County AIDS Network, Santa Rosa, California.
