Police blotter 8-11-17

Tuesday, August 1

A West Covina woman was arrested after trying to rob another woman at an ATM. The attempted robbery occurred in front of First City Credit Union at 250 W. First St. around 8 p.m., Lt. Mike Ciszek of the Claremont Police Department said. According to police, 26-year-old Tatianna Croomes walked up to the woman, brandished a handgun and demanded money or else Ms. Croomes would shoot her. The victim quickly fled the parking lot in her car and called police. Ms. Croomes was found a short time later at the Metrolink station, and was reportedly in possession of a replica handgun. She was arrested, and as she was being booked she allegedly tried to ingest a bag of methamphetamine that was on her at the time of her arrest. Police prevented it, and Ms. Croomes was arrested on charges of attempted robbery, bringing narcotics into a prison and concealing evidence.

Wednesday, August 2

A Corona man was arrested for DUI after he was observed acting drunk at AM/PM. Ammar Khan, 28, was pulled over by police at Claremont and Foothill Boulevards just before 3 a.m. According to the police report, Mr. Khan was observed acting “visibly drunk” and could barely walk inside the convenience store before climbing back into his Toyota Prius. Mr. Khan was arrested and transported to CPD jail, where he was released with a ticket.

Friday, August 4

Two men were arrested in front of Aruffo’s restaurant after a scuffle over a parking space. The incident occurred around 3:40 p.m., when one of the men, identified in police logs and LA County arrest records as 31-year-old Marlon Price, parking his car in an employee parking space behind the restaurant. The second man, identified in police logs and arrest records as 54-year-old Tom Aruffo, told him to move from the space. An argument ensued, to the point that Mr. Price walked to the front of the restaurant, placed a “closed” sign in front of the business and sat down in front of it. A “pushing match” between the two men ensued and both men wanted to prosecute the other for battery. Both were arrested for misdemeanor battery and transported to CPD jail, where they were later released.

A Claremont teen was sent to the hospital after a bad LSD trip. The 19-year-old and a friend were in a garage when the teen “began to act bizarre,” according to Lt. Ciszek, smashing the friend’s car windshield and running into the street. Officers found him “naked and covered in blood” at Sumner Avenue and Briarcroft Road around 6:30 p.m. and was restrained until paramedics arrived. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, and was not arrested. Police did not release his name.

Saturday, August 5

At least $1000 worth of jewelry was stolen from a home on the 400 block of north Cambridge Avenue. Between July 31 at 5 p.m. and August 5 at 8:30 p.m., the burglars entered the home through an open window in a bedroom and ransacked the house, leaving with a safe containing the jewelry and some miscellaneous paperwork.

Sunday, August 6

Police arrested a La Verne man after he was caught stealing bike tires at Pomona College. Around 1:45 a.m., surveillance cameras observed 36-year-old Steven Page taking the front and rear wheels of the victim’s locked bike, stealing the inner tube from one tire and placing the other tire on his bike, Lt. Ciszek said. He was confronted by police, who found burglary tools and were advised of trespassing on campus the day before. He was arrested for petty theft, trespassing and possession of the tools.

A dishwasher, an air compressor and a battery charger were burglarized from a home in Claraboya. Between August 5 at 2:30 p.m. and August 6 at 10 a.m., the burglars broke into a home on the 700 block of Via Santo Tomas and stole the goods, which were worth around $1600.

Monday, August 7

Police arrested two people, one for DUI and the other for a warrant, after they drove on the wrong side of First Street in front of an oncoming squad car. The police cruiser was turning west on to First Street from Yale Avenue around 12:45 a.m. when they observed a Subaru Forester “driving eastbound in the westbound lanes directly at us,” according to the report. Police pulled over the driver, 26-year-old Oscar Merino of Baldwin Park, and found he was driving the car while under the influence of alcohol. The passenger, 21-year-old Abigail Cabral of Montclair, had a warrant out for her arrest. Both were transported to CPD jail.
