Results from the May 18 CIF Southern Section Individual Sectionals prelims at Andulka Park Tennis Center: Claremont singles players Caleb Settles (Palomares League champion) and D.J. Brownlee (Palomares League runner-up) were awarded byes in the first round.

In the second, Caleb bested Yucca Valley’s Ryder Hermansen (Desert Valley League champion), 6-1, 6-0, before defeating Los Osos’ Ethan Lee (Baseline League champion), 6-4, 6-2, in the third. D.J. thrashed Corona Centennial’s Ishaan Gupta (Big VIII League runner-up) in the second round, 6-0, 6-1, then Los Osos’ Brandon Hsiung (Baseline League runner-up), 6-0, 6-2, in the third.

The Wolfpack’s doubles team of Lance Lao and Mateen Ghafarshad (Palomares League champions) was also given a bye in the first round. Lance and Mateen won 6-0, 6-1 over the Vista Del Lago doubles team of Tyler Cortez and Manreet Guraya (Inland Valley League champions), then swept Palm Desert’s Jack Thompson and Shaurya Mahajan (Desert Empire League champions) 6-0, 6-0 in the third. All CHS players qualified for the CIF Southern Section Individual Championship tournament, held Tuesday and Wednesday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont. Caleb had a first-round bye Tuesday morning, then lost to Corona del Mar’s Surf League runner-up John Cross in the second round, 6-4, 7-6 after three tiebreakers.

D.J. began Tuesday by defeating Westlake’s Kimi Basamakov (Marmonte League champion) in the first round, 6-0, 6-3, then won by default in the second before he overcame Martin Luther King High School’s Big VIII champion Ronith Sreem in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-1. On Wednesday, Peninsula’s Sean Ferguson (Bay League champion) defeated D.J., 6-3, 6-0 in the semis.

The doubles team of Lance and Mateen had a bye in the first round Tuesday, then bested Murrieta Valley’s Southwestern League champions Aiden Hever and Owen Pearson, 6-4, 6-3 in the second. They then capped the day by beating Peninsula doubles players Christopher Koeberle and Kyle Shigekawa (Bay League champions), 3-6, 7-5, 10-4 in the quarterfinals. On Wednesday Lance and Mateen fell 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals to eventual tournament champions Sanghyuk Im and James MacDonald, University High’s Pacific Coast champions. Boys and girls track and field

Results from the May 20 CIF Southern Section Masters meet at Moorpark: Denise Jie Yi Chen finished eighth in the 3,200-meter race at 10:48.45. L’Mio Edwards took third in the 800 at 2:09.82 and will advance to the CIF State Championships. The girls relay team of Denise, L’Mio, Isla Bulmer and Kaitlyn Smith won the 4×800 with a time of 9:07.84. The four are Claremont’s first-ever girls CIF SS Track and Field Masters Champions 4×800 relay team and will advance to the CIF-State Championships at Clovis. Results are posted at ca.milesplit.com.

Up next is the 103rd CIF State Track and Field Championships at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium in Clovis. Qualifying events begin Friday, with finals on Saturday. Information is at cifstate.org.

Results from the May 18 CIF Southern Section Individual Sectionals prelims at Whittier Narrows Tennis Club: Webb singles player Morgan Qiu (San Joaquin League champion) bested West Covina’s Valle Vista League runner-up Johnny Su in a grueling first round match, 6-3, 4-6, 12-10. He then took down Andrew Cisneros of Summit (Sunkist League runner-up), 7-5, 6-2, in the second round. Diamond Bar’s Hacienda League champion Solon Chi Chit Au then ended Morgan’s run in the third round, 6-1, 6-0.

The Gauls’ doubles team of Ryan Weigand and Larry Zhou (San Joaquin League champions) fell in the first round to Harvard-Westlake’s Colin Kennedy and Andrew Kurgan (Mission League runners-up), 6-0, 6-1. Ben Thien-Ngern and David Liu (San Joaquin League runners-up) opened the first round by sweeping Edgewood’s Miramonte League champions Omar Millan and Sebastian Morada, 6-0, 6-0, then fell to Ethan Nguyen and Kayvon Kasravi of San Marino (Rio Hondo League runners-up), 6-2, 6-3.
