Pomona College is one of only 22 colleges and universities selected for the Green Honor Roll in The Princeton Review’s Guide to 332 Green Colleges: 2014 Edition.

Released on April 18, the publication profiles schools that demonstrate exemplary commitments to sustainability in their academics, campus infrastructure, activities and career preparation. California made a great showing, with Golden State institutions—including California State Chico, Stanford University, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and UC Santa Cruz—capturing seven of the 22 spots.

Among Pomona’s many sustainability programs and projects, the honor roll noted the local college’s early commitment to strict, green building guidelines and two LEED Platinum residence halls, Pomona Hall and Sontag Hall, as well as Pomona’s Environmental Analysis Program, which incorporates sustainability across the curriculum through offering 11 concentrations.

Other sustainable-minded activities by Pomona that caught the eye of the Princeton Review are funding for sustainability-related research with faculty; increases in dining hall sustainable food purchases; Marine Stewardship Council certification; and the wide range of sustainability-related student groups and activities. The latter includes the sustainability film festival, dorm energy use competitions, the     Environmental Quality Committee (EQC), Food       Rescue, Green Bikes, the Organic Farm and Clean Sweep/ReCoop.

The Princeton Review chose the schools for this guide based on a survey it conducted in 2013 of administrators at hundreds of four-year colleges to measure the schools’ commitment to the environment and to sustainability.
