Months after its cancellation and subsequent rescheduling, Claremont High School’s in-person commencement has once again been cancelled.

In an announcement sent out Thursday, CHS Principal Brett O’Connor said he had hoped  until recently that a modified graduation on July 30 could go forward. However, the surge in COVID-19 cases across the region, combined with the recent order from Sacramento and the decision by the CUSD board to cancel in-person classes in the fall changed his mind.

In its place, CHS will hold a drive-up commencement at the school on July 28 and 29 between the hours of 2 and 8 p.m.

The prom which was scheduled for July 25 has also been cancelled.

“The CHS staff and I are incredibly proud of the resilience, fortitude and perseverance the Class of 2020 has demonstrated. We also appreciate the patience and understanding the caregivers have displayed in the last few months,” Mr. O’Connor said in a statement.

Results from a survey of students, parents and caregivers conducted in May show that if the July graduation had to be cancelled, those polled preferred the celebration to be rescheduled for Thanksgiving or winter break. However, Mr. O’Connor cited the uncertainty of the pandemic as making those options imprudent.
