Of the many headlines volleyed our way over the past six months, the experiences of women during the COVID-19 pandemic have been particularly devastating. Women are shouldering more responsibility at home. They have been more likely to suffer job loss or be employed in industries—like health care and education—that put them on the front line of the pandemic. Covering these issues is the bread and butter of a brand new media organization: The 19th*.
Co-founded by this year’s Scripps College Roxanne Wilson Leader-in-Residence, Ms. Ramshaw, The 19th* (named for the amendment that gave women the right to vote and whose asterisk serves as an acknowledgment that this right was granted first to white women only) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan newsroom reporting at the intersection of gender, politics and policy.
Although women make up more than half of the electorate, they are underrepresented in politics and journalism. The 19th* is seeking to change that with a newsroom where women are covering the most important issues of our time: race, the election, childcare and health.
Ms. Ramshaw was named to the Wrap’s Innovators list and as one of Fortune Magazine’s 40 Under 40.
