At the next meeting of the Claremont Unified School District Board of Education, the board will vote on a resolution to deny a second petition for the establishment of a new charter school, the Embracing the Whole Child Arts and Technology Academy.

The petition, a revised version of a previous petition denied by the school board several months ago, was presented at the February 7, 2013 school board meeting. The charter school is the brainchild of Lynette Lucas, an education advocate who hopes to create a school aimed at helping Claremont’s lowest-income students succeed.

Also on tap for the meeting, set for Thursday, April 4 at 6:30 p.m., are reports on the Single Plans for Student Achievement (SPSA), which will be delivered by the principals and/or staff at Chaparral and Vista del Valle Elementary Schools. An SPSA is a report in which a school shares the progress toward academic and behavioral goals set the previous year and discusses its new areas of focus.

The board will also vote on some routine consent items, including the approval of an overnight field trip for 6 students from the Wolfpacket to attend the Journalism Education Association (JEA) in San Francisco on April 25-28 plus the district’s plan to contract with contractor/consultants. These include contracting with Liz Carillo, a school psychologist, to work in the area of special education and adding hours for Dr. Robin Morris, who performs Individualized Education Evaluations for special education students in the district.

All school board meetings are held at the Richard S. Kirkendall Education Center at 170 W. San Jose Ave. in Claremont.
