San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments and Southern California Regional Energy Network recently named 16 cities “energy champions” for their reduction in energy usage, education and public outreach, energy efficient project implementation, and environmental policy advancement.

In July 1963 — 60 years ago this month — the brand new Claremont Friends Meeting House at 727 Harrison Ave. welcomed Friends for the first time. Previously the Friends had been worshipping in a room at Scripps College. Now they had their own building designed by renowned Claremont architect Fred McDowell, whose wife Emily was a member of the congregation.

The Webb Schools sophomore Eric Gu recently played a violin solo at Carnegie Hall in New York during a concert with Classical European Music Academy Los Angeles, an all-ages orchestra and violin academy, for the Symphonic Series for Bands and Orchestras.

Harvey Mudd College students Ryan O’Hara and Lucien Tsai were recently named astronaut scholars by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. The pair were chosen among 68 undergraduate juniors and seniors from 46 universities and colleges around the nation based on “their exemplary academic performance, ingenuity and unique aptitude for research,” a news release read.

The Friends of the Claremont Library invite the community to a free and open to the public children’s book festival at the Claremont Helen Renwick Library, 208 N. Harvard Ave., from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 29. The event includes books, crafts, and librarians reading stories.

Nonprofit thrift store the Economy Shop, 325 W. First St. is closed, but the public is invited to donate goods during its offseason. Staff are looking to build up the store’s inventory ahead of its 90th anniversary reopening on Wednesday, August 30.

Three men entered the Diamond Center with hammers and shattered numerous display cases at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 29, stealing an unknown amount of jewelry from the 147 Yale Ave. store. This was followed by a similarly brazen robbery in La Verne two days later.
