The arraignment of Claremont resident Jeffrey Alexander Calzada, accused of murdering a young woman in Claremont last month, has been delayed a second time. It is now scheduled for November 1 in Department F of Pomona Superior Court. Calzada is being held in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Inmate Reception Center in L.A. in lieu of $2 million bail.
Pomona College recently announced its President G. Gabrielle Starr was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences at a ceremony held in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Saturday, September 10. Starr was originally part of the 2020 cohort that included 276 total members such as singer Joan Baez, former United States Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., and author Ann Patchett. Due to the pandemic, ceremonies for the 2020 and 2021 cohorts were delayed until recently.

Claremont police took part in a recent sting operation in which undercover officers posed as sex workers that has resulted in the arrest of 19 “johns.” On August 26 and September 15, the Claremont and Pomona police departments, and the Los Angeles County Probation Department “conducted a two-day prostitution detail” in the area of Indian Hill Blvd. and the 10 Freeway, according to a CPD press release.

Claremont Heritage presents its 40th annual home tour on Sunday, October 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Claremont Heritage conducted its very first home tour in 1982, and this year’s event marks 40 years of presenting significant historic and architectural homes for members and the public to experience. Over the years Heritage has welcomed thousands of people to learn about the rich architectural heritage of this fine small town.

The Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College has opened Los Angeles-based artist Christina Fernandez’s exhibit, “Under the Sun,” on view through December 18. The exhibition features photographic installations that touch on topics such as “labor, land and light” and “places them in dialogue with objects the artist selected from the Benton’s collection,” according to a news release.

A rare and spectacular electrical storm swept through Claremont Sunday evening with multiple lightning strikes, loud thunder, and heavy rain. The storm was a spin-off of sorts from tropical storm Kay, which brushed by Los Angeles County earlier in the week. Professional photographer Erin Hughes was in the Village and captured this stunning image of the Verbal Building during the storm.
