The Claremont Unified School District Board of Education handled business in seven minutes last week with the only item of note being the first reading of updated policies regarding transitional kindergarten and high school graduation requirements. “These were existing Board Policies, but due to legislation and things that come down from the California Department of Education, a few changes needed to be made,” CUSD Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services Julie Olesniewicz wrote in an email. “We get our suggestions from the California School Boards Association.” Courier photo/Andrew Alonzo
When P.J. Walker was in second grade he wanted to take classes in hip hop style dancing taught at Village Dance Arts in Claremont. Always seeking to encourage her child’s interests, Grace Kao was more than happy to accommodate, but with a slight caveat. She noticed that any boy who signed up for ballet lessons could take the other classes for free, so P.J. enrolled in both.

On Monday the Claremont Police Department announced it had selected Brittany Sornborger to be the next school resource officer. The SRO handles most calls for service at Claremont’s public school campuses as well as related duties including attending afterschool events such as football games.
On Thursday, the Claremont High School girls tennis team added a fifth consecutive title to their history after they defeated Glendora High School at home, 16-2. The match not only closed out Palomares league play, but also extended the team’s unbeaten run to 12 matches.
The CHS girls varsity tennis team continues its dominance in the Palomares League with an impressive 15-3 win over the Alta Loma Braves on Tuesday, Followed by an equally commanding victory over Glendora, 16-2, on Thursday.

A Claremont High School teacher was off the job Friday after inflammatory comments allegedly made to students Thursday resulted in the school district opening an investigation into the incident. The bad news is the number of Claremont Unified School District students quarantined due to COVID-19 infection or exposure rose sharply this week, with Condit Elementary’s outsized numbers deemed an “outbreak” by Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
The defending San Antonio League champion Claremont High School Wolfpack football team is off to a rough start this season, but that may be part of the plan.
